GOVERNMENT MULLS CHINA'S PROPOSAL TO RECOGNISE ITS VARSITIES
GOVERNMENT MULLS CHINA'S PROPOSAL TO RECOGNISE ITS VARSITIES
PUTRAJAYA, June 9 (Bernama) -- The government will study China's call to
recognise its institutions of higher education to enable more Malaysian students
to study there.
Higher Education Minister, Mohamed Khaled Nordin, said his ministry was in
the process of drawing up guidelines and the framework on the matter.
He said University Technology Mara (UiTM) and University Malaya (UM) had
been asked to cooperate and come up with a detailed framework that would benefit
both countries.
"We welcome the call by China for recognition and for them to recognise our
institutions so there would not be problems for graduates to find
employment.
"We seek a framework that leads to a win-win situation for both countries,"
Khaled told reporters after his ministry's monthly gathering here Tuesday.
He said the proposal by China was among matters discussed during the visit
by Prime Minister Najib Razak to China last month.
Khaled said the framwork would be ready by October this year and at the same
time his ministry would identify the institutions that deserved recognition.
"The proposal arose after there were problems involving students who could
not get work due to graduating from insitutions of higher education that were
not recognised by both countries.
"China has also sent many of their students to study here especially at the
undergraduate level. If we recognise their institutions they are willing to
recognise ours," he said.
There are 10,000 students from China studying in Malaysia while there are
2,000 Malaysian students in China studying traditional Chinese medicine and
Mandarin.
