(2nd LD) S. Korean man says purported photo of N. Korean successor his own
(ATTN: UPDATES throughout; ADDS comments throughout)
By Sam Kim
SEOUL, June 10 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean man said Wednesday the photo of a man a
Japanese television station claims to be that of the successor to North Korean
leader Kim Jong-il is, in fact, his own.
The photo, shown by Japan's Asahi TV earlier Wednesday, shows a young man wearing
sunglasses and a white T-shirt. The report said the photo, which it says it
obtained exclusively, is of Kim's third son, Jong-un, who is apparently preparing
to take over the communist regime.
However, a 40-year-old South Korean man, Bae Seok-bum, told Yonhap by phone the
picture is his own. It was posted on an Internet community he runs on shamanism
in February this year so Bae could show the facial similarities between himself
and Kim Jong-il.
"I'm speechless," said Bae, who works in construction business, upon finding the
photo on the Internet. In it, Bae is shown leaning against a wooden pavilion on
which two people are sitting.
"I only uploaded the picture to share with the members of my community how
similar my face was to that of Kim Jong-il. I didn't think it would go this far,"
he said.
Bae said he attached a picture of Kim Jong-il, 67, wearing his trademark
sunglasses to that of his own by using a computer graphic program earlier this
year.
The picture shown by Asahi TV only showed the segment in which Bae is depicted.
In response to Bae's post, tens of his online community members agreed that the
two resemble each other. Another post showed a series of other pictures of Bae,
apparently on an outing.
"I almost fell for it, Bae," one member posted earlier this year, along an
emoticon expressing amusement. "You look just like Kim Jong-il."
Others flocked to the Web site following the Asahi report, asking why the picture
of the Web site operator was making headlines.
The Seoul bureau of Asahi TV said it was not authorized to confirm the accuracy
of its report. The Tokyo bureau has yet to return a call seeking comment.
Dozens of media outlets, including South Korean ones, have carried the snapshot
of the television report, saying the picture appears to be that of Jong-un.
Bae said his photo was taken in summer last year.
