SC TO HOST WORLD CAPITAL MARKETS SYMPOSIUM IN AUGUST
KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- The Securities Commission (SC) will host
a two-day international symposium here in August to formulate responses to the
world economic crisis.
The World Capital Markets Symposium from Aug 10 is also aimed at profiling
Malaysia as widely as possible among emerging markets and developed countries,
SC chairman Zarinah Anwar said Wednesday.
"Malaysia wants to play a lead role among Asian countries, have our voices
heard in the formulation of responses to the crisis that is affecting all
countries," she told reporters here.
Zarinah said some world reknowned personalities would speak at the forum,
including Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman, Economics Adviser to President Barack
Obama Dr Laura D'Andrea Tyson and former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief
economist Dr Raghuram Rajan.
Zarinah said more and more countries were becoming major emerging economies
with India, China, Brazil and Indonesia now included in the G-20, a grouping of
finance ministers and central bank governors of the leading economies.
On the way forward for Malaysia to gain a higher profile among these
markets, she said the SC would be organising "reverse road shows", by bringing
major market players to the country to see for themselves what it could offer.
"When we organise road shows in other countries, there's so much that
potential investors in our capital market can gain from our officials but
there's nothing like them coming here and seeing what we can offer," she said.
Over 400 people are expected to attend the symposium to be opened by Prime
Minister Najib Razak, who will also deliver a key-note address.
