Al Zaabi: Model project to promote more transparency in labour affairs
Geneva - The United Arab Emirates is embarking on an ambitious pilot project to improve conditions of contractual foreign workers. The country has already signed agreements with India and Philippines on launching the project.
This came during a speech delivered today by UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN European Headquarter before the Human Rights Council in which he shed light on the steps taken to enhance contractual workers' rights.
Al Zaabi referred to UAE's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) which was unanimously adopted at the 10th session of the HRC in Geneva last March.
"The United Arab Emirates submitted its Universal Periodic Review report with the participation of all stakeholders, and participated in all sessions in accordance with all relevant conventions and mechanisms. The Government of the United Arab Emirates is keen to improve the conditions for foreign workers and in this vein, it has struck an agreement with the Philippines and India," he said.
The cooperation made with the Philippines and India resulted in the formation of a model project on the contractual work conditions of foreign workers.
A memorandum of Understanding on the project was signed on June 12 in Geneva on the sidelines of the International Labour Organisation's annual conference.
"The United Arab Emirates planned to document best practices in this regard, and they would be circulated in Geneva. The project is aimed at achieving more transparency with regard to the work and arrival of foreign workers in the United Arab Emirates. In addition, the Government of the United Arab Emirates also worked closely with the International Labour Organisation and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in this regard."
