All Eyes On Thailand’s Election Results As Polling Centres Close

BANGKOK, May 14 (Bernama) --  All eyes are on Thailand’s election results as polling stations close at 5 pm (local time) and the counting process begins.

Some 52 million voters are eligible to elect the 500-seat House of Representatives. The tightly-contested election saw more than 6,000 candidates from 67 political parties contesting for 500 seats in the lower house.

There are about 94,737 polling stations nationwide which opened at 8 am and closed at 5 pm Sunday.

The counting process started at polling stations once the polling drew a close.

The Election Commission (EC) of Thailand expects 80 per cent of some 52 million eligible voters to cast their ballots.

The EC said it expects to release 95 per cent of unofficial results by 11 pm.

The EC is expected to certify 95 per cent of the votes or 475 of the 500 seats within 60 days.

There are 400 seats for winning constituency candidates and 100 party seats allocated on a proportional representation basis.

Each voter cast two ballots – one for a local constituency representative and the other for their preferred party at national level.
