SHARE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE TO ACHIEVE EFA GOALS

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has always believed in the
sharing of experience and knowledge through partnerships in the region and
beyond to attain the Education For All (EFA) goals and targets, Muhyiddin Yassin
said Tuesday.

The deputy prime minister said partnerships could take the form of an
exchange of expertise through the attachment of personnel, institutional
linkages and so on.

"I'm certain that many of us will attest to the fact that the lack of
resources is a key constraint in the attainment of the EFA. This we believe will
be a challenge," he said at the opening of the 17th Conference of Commonwealth
Education Ministers (17th CCEM) here.

Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said action was needed by all
stakeholders at the global level and by national governments, civil society and
donors at the country level to ensure that the objective remained on course.

"We believe that all our children should have equity of access not merely to
education, but to quality education," he said.

He noted that in the Ninth Malaysia Plan, the government had allocated more
than RM25.8 billion, which represented 16.7 per cent of the total government
expenditure, to the education sector.

"Our literacy rate of more than 93 per cent indicates Malaysia's commitment
to the provision of quality education."

Muhyiddin said the 17th CCEM from June 15 to 19 provided an excellent
platform for forging collaborations and partnerships that mobilise resources and
harmonise strategies to alleviate the impact of the global economic crisis on
the education systems of the member states.

Malaysia has fostered partnerships with the Southeast Asian Ministers of
Education Organisation (Seameo) and Asean and Unesco partners to make the EFA a
reality, he added.

Later at a news conference, Muhyiddin said the decision on the policy of
teaching mathematics and science in English would be announced soon.

"I will be briefing the prime minister in the next few days," he said.
