TEACHER, TWO POLICEMAN KILLED IN SOUTHERN THAILAND

BANGKOK, June 16 (Bernama) -- Insurgents shot dead a female teacher and
detonated a bomb that killed two policeman in the latest series of attacks on
government officials in the restive southern Thailand Tuesday.

A police spokesman said that in the first incident in Raman district of
Yala, a 52-year-old teacher, who was riding a motorcycle to school, was attacked
by unknown gunmen.

She was shot in the head and died on the spot. More than 120 teachers had
been killed in the past five years, including an eight-month pregnant teacher
early this month.

In Saiburi district, Pattani, a bomb placed on a motorcycle exploded,
killing two policemen.

The spokesman said the incident happened when several policeman from the
Saiburi district police station removed a suspicious motorcycle and took it back
to the station for further investigation.

More than 3,500 people have died in daily violence since January, 2004 when
separatist groups resumed their armed campaign to seek independence for the
three Muslim-majority provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani.
