East Asian women ministers to discuss economic crisis, female rights in Seoul meeting

SEOUL, June 17 (Yonhap) -- Female ministers from East Asian countries will gather
in Seoul next week to discuss women's rights and roles amid the ongoing global
economic crisis, South Korea's Gender Equality Ministry said Wednesday.
Ministers from 13 nations including South Korea, China, Japan, Indonesia and
Cambodia, along with representatives of three U.N. organizations including the
U.N. Development Program will share their views on women's issues at the forum
June 24-26, the ministry said in a press release.
It is the first time for South Korea to host the biennial forum, the first of
which was held in Japan.
Under the title "Economic Crisis and Women," participants will exchange views on
various issues including women's role in politics and low-carbon green growth.
They will endorse a joint statement on future tasks and roles on the final day of
the forum to be held at Hotel Shilla, central Seoul.
"This meeting will provide an opportunity to expand recognition of female rights
in East Asia and improve networks among the countries in the region," Seoul's
Gender Equality Minister Byun Do-yoon said in the press release.
