EU UNVEILS 300,000 EURO GRANT FOR DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS



KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- The European Union (EU) under its
executive arm, the European Commission, has unveiled its latest grants for civil
society in the area of democracy and human rights worth RM1.47 million (300,000
Euro).

The grant programme, implemented in partnership with the Malaysian Human
Rights Commission (Suhakam), aimed to help strengthen the role of civil society
in promoting human rights and democracy with key focus on the development and
training for human rights professionals, advocacy and raising awareness in
children's rights and the rights of indigenous people.

"We are hopeful that this grant will serve civil society organisations in
Malaysia. Our key focus is on women, children and indigenous people," said the
Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Malaysia,
Vincent Piket, in a statement here Wednesday.

Piket said the grants were available to interested applicants from
non-profit organisations, civil society, higher education institutions from
Malaysia, EU member states or a member state of the European Economic Area.

Piket said an information meeting would be held on July 1 at 2pm for
interested applicants, adding that registration for this session could be made
via email to mahdalela.yusof-pardi@ec.europa.eu
