S. Korea leads OECD members in ICT exports: report

By Kim Young-gyo
SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's exports in the information and
communication technology (ICT) sector top those of major world economies,
according to an international report released Friday.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said South
Korea's trade surplus in the ICT sector posted US$43.3 billion in 2007, the
highest among the 30 OECD member nations. In 2006, Korea's surplus was $37.5
billion.
The report, called the OECD Science, Technology and Industry Scoreboard, provides
a glimpse into the status of each member nation's ICT sector.
South Korea was followed by Japan with $36.4 billion and Mexico with $11.4 billion.
Industry watchers contributed South Korea's trade surplus in the ICT sector
largely to the country's two electronics giants, Samsung Electronics Co. and LG
Electronics Co, which lead the global TV and handset markets.
Only eight member countries in the OECD recorded trade surpluses in the sector,
the report said.
The United States and Britain recorded trade deficits of $108.7 billion and $33.1
billion, respectively, the report noted.
