ACEHNESE GETS JAIL, WHIPPING FOR HANDGUN POSSESSION

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Bernama) -- An Achehnese was sentenced to seven years
jail and six strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court here Friday for
possession of a pistol (handgun) five years ago.

Herlen Haryone, 36, was also jailed five years for possession of six rounds
of ammunition, the sentences to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on
Oct 8, 2004.

He was found guilty of committing the offences at Jalan 15/38D, Taman Sri
Sinar, Kepong, on Oct 18, 2004.

The sentences were similar to those of his compatriot, Samsuwar Yusuf, 42, a
permanent resident, who changed his plea and pleaded guilty at the end of the
prosecution case on April 15.

The court earlier heard that a police patrol team stopped their car and
found the Pietro Baretta pistol and ammunition in the front right door speaker.

Herlen was represented by counsel V. Jayamurugan while deputy public
prosecutor Ahmad Fuad Othman appeared for the prosecution before judge Mohamad
Sekeri.
