VP ASKS MADURA TO PREPARE EDUCATION FOR INDUSTRY
Surabaya, Indonesia, June 19 (ANTARA)- Vice President M Jusuf Kalla has asked the East Java governor to prepare education and training for Madura's people to support the island's industrialization in the future.
"I hereby ask district heads in Madura and the East Java governor to prepare education and training before industry flourishes here," Kalla said on Friday when attending a mass prayer service at the Syaichona Cholil mosque in Bangkalan, Madura Island.
The service, attended also by all district heads of Madura and the East Java governor, was organized to express gratitude to God for the completion of the Surabaya-Madura (Suramadu) bridge.
The Suramadu bridge's existence was expected to help Madura become an industrial center, Kalla said.
Therefore, the local authorities must improve the quality of local human resources through education, he said.
On the occasion, Kalla thanked all parties that had supported the construction of the country's longest bridge.
"We also thank the initiator of the bridge construction, former East Java governor M Noer," he said.
Kalla also expressed gratitude to former president Megawati Soekarnoputri who started the bridge's construction work, and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who dedicated the new bridge recently.
He said the bridge's existence would have positive and negative implications.
"Madura will be able to accept industry, but without night entertainment, without karaoke. It needs support from the local legislative council (DPRD) to issue local regulations in line with the local people's moral values," he said.
Bangkalan District Head Fuad Amin earlier thanked President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President M Jusuf Kalla for allocating Rp2.8 trillion in funds for the bridge's construction.
Built at a total cost of about Rp4.5 trillion, the 5,348-meter-long Suramadu bridge is the longest structure of its kind in Indonesia.***
