POLICE QUIZ KPK VICE CHIEF ABOUT PHONE TAPS

Jakarta, June 19 (ANTARA) - Jakarta police on Friday questioned Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Vice Chairman Chandra M. Hamzah for having issued an order to tap the phones of murdered businessman Nasruddin Zulkarnaen and his wife Rani Juliani.

"Chandra Hamzah was questioned starting at 10.00 am earlier today," chief of the Jakarta police's criminal investigation department, Chief Commissioner M. Iriawan, said here Friday.

Iriawan said police wanted to know the reason for ordering the phone taps which were carried out between January 6 and March 12, 2009.

The police also wished to ascertain whether the phone taps had anything to do with Zulkarnaen's murder, he said.

Police have already arrested nine suspects over the murder and one of them was suspended KPK Chairman Antasari Azhar who police have earlier described as the crime's mastermind.

Police theorized Azhar had plotted and paid hitmen to kill Zulkarnaen, a director of state-owned PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran, over a quarrel about the latter's wife, Rani Juliani whom both men knew when she was working as a golf caddy.

Iriawan said police had earlier also questioned the KPK's director of information and data, Budi Ibrahim, and five of his staff members about the phone taps.

During the questioning, police learned that the KPK had been tapping five phone numbers, including Zulkarnaen's and Rani Juliani's.

Police also learned the order to bug Zulkarnaen's and Rani Juliani's phones originally came from Antasari Azhar who justified his order by claiming Zulkarnaen and Rani Juliani were often harassing his wife, Ida Laksmiwati, over the phone.

Iriawan said police had already obtained and listened to recordings of Zulkarnaen's and Rani Juliani's tapped phone conversations. Police had confiscated the recordings to be used as evidence.

But Iriawan declined to divulge the contents of the tapped phone conversations or to comment on the possibility they were linked to Zulkarnaen's murder.

"The press can draw their own conclusions when the murder case is heard in court. Then they will know why on earth Antasari needed to eavesdrop on Zulkarnaen's and Rani Julian's phone conversations," he said. ***
