GLOBAL HUB TO SUPPORT SUU KYI
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- British High Commisioner Boyd McCleary
today led a group of Malaysian celebrities to post messages in an online
campaign for the release of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The aim of online campaign www.64forsuu.org was to mark the 64th birthday of
the Nobel laureate who has been confined for nearly 14 of the past 20 years, and
now faces up to five years in jail.
McClearly said the campaign drew thousands of messages of support, including
good wishes from world leaders and celebrities.
"This website targets anyone from any background from around the world to
write within 64 words to Suu Kyi," he said at Telawi Bistro, Bangsar.
Among the celebrities who took part included Marina Mahathir,
film directors Othman Hafsham and Susan Lankester, actors Jit Murad and Harith
Iskander, television host Asha Gill and author Mohana Gill.
The high commisioner then joined the celebrities to light candles on a
symbolic cake and then observed 64 seconds of silence to pay tribute to Suu
Kyi's courage and determination.
