UNEMPLOYMENT IN INDONESIA REACHES NINE MILLION
Semarang, Indonesia, June 20 (ANTARA) - The number of unemployed people in Indonesia, based on a February 2008 survey, was recorded at nine million, Manpower Minister Erman Suparno said.
"The number of unemployed workers is dominated by male," the minister said in a student cooperative forum at the Semarang State University (UNNES), here on Saturday.
He said that of the nine million unemployed workers, about 5 million were male and 4 million were female. "The number of the Indonesian people at present is recorded at 228 million with a workforce of 112 million," he said.
Of the 112 million workers, about 62 percent are male and 38 percent are female. "This means that the number of unemployed people in Indonesia is about 8 percent of the population," the minister said.
According to the minister, seen from educational background the unemployed number of people is dominated (50 percent) by those who were not graduated or graduates of elementary schools, and junior high school graduates.
The number of the unemployed workers who were graduates from junior high schools and below reached 4.92 million while that who were graduates from senior high schools was 3.3 million, or about 40 percent. The remaining 10 percent or about 1.14 million were diploma or university graduates.
The minister said that the number of unemployed people in urban areas turned out to be bigger than that in villages with a comparison of 5.62 million and 4.39 million.
The urban unemployment is dominated by senior high school graduates, namely about 35.74 percent, followed by junior high school (23.01 percent and university (6.68 percent).
"A high unemployment rate is a national problem because it would affect the economy and human resources which are not utilized," the minister said.
He said that the big unemployment number was a result of mismanagement by the state so far. ***
