GOVT TO PROVIDE INTERNET SERVICE NETWORKS ACROSS COUNTRY

Brebes, Indonesia, June 20 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is targeting the provision of internet service networks across the country in 2010 in the framework of implementing its "smart villages" program.

"We expect the 'internet-goes-to-village' program to be completed by 2010 as part of our efforts to create 'smart villages," Information and Communications Minister M Nuh said after attending a congress of the Islamic organizations IPNU and IPPNU here on Saturday.

He said this year the government expected to be able to finish the internet network across villages in the country totalling 32,000 networks in 72,000 villages to be served by the service.

However, he added that right now the government could not as yet reach the eastern region and therefore the target for the region would be in 2010.

M Nuh said the government made the program to improve the people's knowledge. The network would be stationed in a location close to the community and its supervision is put in the hands of village administrators. "So there is no need to have a special team to control it," he said.

The minister said that the government had allocated up to Rp1.4 trillion for the program. He hoped the smart village program could be realized by 2010.

Asked about the negative impact of the internet service he said he did not bother about it too much. "What is important is self-filtering against unwanted materials. If it is implemented there will be less fear about it," he said.***
