BATIKS OF OBAMA'S MOTHER DISPLAYED IN SAN FRANCISCO

New York, June 20 (ANTARA) - A batik collection of the late Ann Dunham, President Barack Obama's mother, is currently being displayed in San Francisco after being exhibited in Chicago and Los Angeles earlier.

The exhibition was officially opened with a reception held at the main exhibition building on the campus of the California College of the Arts, San Francisco, on Wednesday (June 17), according to information from the Indonesian consulate general in San Francisco, Friday.

The expo themed "A Lady Found A Culture in Its Cloth: Barack Obama's Mother and Indonesian Batiks" is being held from June 18 to 21, 2009, at the California College of the Arts.

The opening ceremony was attended by around 200 guests including foreign diplomats, local officials, Indonesian prominent figures in San Francisco-Bay area, and a number of Americans who love Indonesian arts and culture.

The event was highlighted with a performance of 'Gamelan' (Balinese and Javanese traditional music) group Kori Mas whose members are Americans. They played several songs using Balinese bamboo 'gamelan' instruments.

The exhibition is organized jointly by The Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in San Francisco, the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) Washington D.C., the San Francisco Mayor Office of Protocol, and the California College of the Arts (CCA).

The opening ceremony was marked by a striking of 'gong' by Indonesia's Deputy Ambassador to the United States Salman Al Farisi and Commissioner PJ Johnston, who represented San Francisco county and city.

Some 20 batik clothes and two batik scarfs belonging to Ann Dunham are on display. The batiks are originally from Yogyakarta, Solo (Central Java), Indramayu, Cirebon (West Java), Pekalongan, and Madura (East Java).
A number of pictures depicting activities of Ann Dunham, her Indonesian husband, Soetoro, and young Barack Obama, when they were staying in Jakarta, are also exhibited.

A similar exhibition was previously held in Chicago (May 17-20), and Lost Angeles (June 1-4). And it will be held in Houston (Texas) on July 2-5, New York, July 21-24, and finally Washington D.C. on August 9-23.
