SELF-RESTRAINT NEEDED IN USING IT SERVICES: INFO MINISTER


Brebes, C Java, June 20 (ANTARA) - Communications and Information Minister M Nuh has called on the public to exercise self-restraint in accessing material offered by information technology systems.

Speaking to the press on the sidelines of an Islamic organization congress here Saturday, he said it was very difficult to block information flows in the present era of information technology.

Therefore, he called on all IT users to be able to observe self-restraint.

"Technology develops very fast. Unless we are able to restrain oruselves, we may be hurt," he said.

With regard to the internet service, he said that unlimited access to it was now abundant including to its porn sites although maximum controls were in place.

He said users always found ways to access the sites. "If One site is blocked, people can always find ways to open others," he said.

Thereofore, he said, people should be able to control themselves. "Self-control or self-restraint against porn sites or other sites is important," he said.

Regarding public dissatisfaction about the Electronic Transactions and Information Law (ITE Law), the minister suggested that the dissenting parties seek a judicial review of the law.

"Please give us suggestions if you think the law is still imperfect. The government will consider people's complaints," he said.
