Lee nominates top prosecution, tax officials

SEOUL, June 21 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak on Sunday announced new
nominees for the nation's top prosecutor and tax official positions, promoting
Chun Sung-gwan, chief of the Seoul District Prosecutors' Office, to the post of
prosecutor general, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said.

Chun will succeed Lim Chae-jin, who resigned in early June amid public criticism
over an extended corruption probe into the family of former President Roh
Moo-hyun, which led to Roh's suicide on May 23.
The president also designated Baek Yong-ho, chairman of the Fair Trade
Commission, as new chief of the National Tax Service (NTS), a post which has
remained vacant since January, when Han Sang-ryul quit as NTS head, holding
himself responsible for a bribery scandal involving his immediate predecessor.
The appointment of both Chun and Baek will be confirmed following their
confirmation hearings at the National Assembly.
The 51-year-old Chun, a native of Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, has long
served at key prosecution posts since graduating from Seoul National University.
Baek, 52, had long served as a policy adviser to Lee prior to his presidential
election in 2007.
"Chun is the right person to establish the rule of law and overhaul the status of
the prosecution in accordance with the changing times," Cheong Wa Dae said in a
statement.
"Baek is credited with having advanced the government's fair trade policies
through a successful management of the Fair Trade Commission. He is expected to
reform the National Tax Service," said the presidential office.
