KKESH Performs First of its Kind in the Middle East Corneal Transplant

Riyadh, October 30, 2023, SPA -- King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH) has performed the first transplant of the thin inner lining of the cornea using the endothelium-in surgical technique of Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) for the first time in the Middle East.
Head of the Eye Bank at KKESH Dr. Mohammed Almutlak said that the hospital is an important reference when it comes to different types of corneal transplants, adding that this first-of-its-kind operation in the Middle East is a result of cooperation between KKESH and the Lions World Vision Institute.
According to him, cornea donations contribute to restoring the sight of many patients.
