ROADS IN JAKARTA TO BE REBUILT WITH CONCRETE
Jakarta, June 22 (ANTARA) - The Jakarta city administration decided on Monday to rebuild roads in the Indonesian capital with concrete to make them stronger in resisting loads and flood waters.
"Efforts will be made in the future to rebuild roads that have been damaged with concrete. It will be done in stages as the cost is very high," Governor Fauzi Bowo told a regional legislative assembly meeting to mark the city's 482nd anniversary.
He said vehicles' loads and annual floods had so far been the main factors contributing to road damage.
The governor said roads that were damaged had worsened traffic jams caused by a gap in the ratio between the number of cars and the length of roads.
"Roads that we asphalt are always damaged when the rainy season comes. Therefore we are thinking of rebuilding them with concrete. Although it will cost a lot, the new roads will be more durable," Vice Governor Prijanto said.
In support of his statement he referred to the smooth traffic in the Ancol-Martadinata-Tanjung Priok road following rebuilding with concrete.
He said "the road used to be like a pool when rain came but the situation no longer exists now," after it was rebuilt with concrete.
Prijanto said not all roads in the city would be rebuilt with concrete all at once in view of the cost, adding the city administration would prioritize those bearing heavy loads.
"This year priority is given to the Yos Sudarso road," he said.
He said the funds for the project would be taken from the regional budget. "Efficiency will be increased by delaying projects considered not urgent such as studies or talk shows. We will prioritize physical development projects," he said.
"We will possibly ask for assistance from the central government like what we have done for the East Canal Flood Control project," he said.
