Hyundai Motor's cumulative sales in Africa top 1 mln units

SEOUL, June 23 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's leading automaker,
said Tuesday its accumulated sales in Africa have topped 1 million units, 33
years after entering the market on the continent.

Hyundai began shipping the Pony, the first Korean car, to Liberia in 1976. The
company's annual sales in Egypt, Nigeria and other African countries topped
100,000 units in 2005.
Its market share in Africa stood at 11.6 percent last year, the second-highest
after Toyota Motor Corp. of Japan.
Hyundai Motor sold a total of 53,000 units in Egypt last year, becoming the
nation's No. 1 auto brand.
