S. Korean vice foreign minister to attend U.N. meeting on financial crisis

SEOUL, June 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Shin Kak-soo will
attend a U.N. meeting on the global financial and economic crisis later this week
in New York, his ministry said Tuesday.
Shin will serve as Seoul's representative to the U.N. Conference at the Highest
Level on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Development,
slated to be held from Wednesday to Friday.
"In the upcoming meeting, high-level officials from U.N. member countries
including heads of states from the Philippines, Nigeria, and Bolivia, will
discuss the impact of the crisis on development and the U.N.'s role in dealing
with the issue," the ministry said in a press release.
Shin plans to deliver a speech on the importance of closer international
cooperation to effectively counter the crisis.
On the sidelines of the event, Shin will have a series of bilateral meetings with
U.N. officials, including B. Lynn Pascoe, under secretary-general for political
affairs, John Holmes, the emergency relief coordinator, and Alain Le Roy, the
new head of peacekeeping operations, according to the ministry.
