Int`l boxing body to send inquiry team to S. Korea

SEOUL, June 23 (Yonhap) -- An international boxing governing body will send a
team to South Korea next month to investigate allegations that South Korean
boxers intentionally fudged their weigh-ins at a competition last April,
officials here said Tuesday.
The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) banned players and staff of
the Korean Amateur Boxing Federation (KABF) late last month from participating in
international boxing competitions after the allegations were raised.
The South Korean team is also accused of sending an unregistered team doctor to a
competition.
"AIBA told the Korea Olympic Committee (KOC) that they will send the inquiry team
on July 7," an official from the KOC said.
Last week, KOC Chairman Park Yong-sung sent a letter to AIBA, headquartered in
Lausanne, Switzerland, and demanded that AIBA lift the ban and launch an
investigation before imposing the penalty, the official said.
The KABF needs to be cleared of weigh-in cheating in order to be able to
participate in the World Championship in Italy in September.
Due to the suspension, South Korea was not allowed to compete in the Asian Boxing
Championship earlier this month in China.
AIBA has not responded to South Korea's request that the ban be lifted first, the
official said.
