Rasht gained a prominent political, cultural, social and economic position as a city in northern Iran in 1557 after the arrival of Sultan Mohammad, who represented the Tahmasp I, the second shah of Safavid empire. The Municipality of Rasht holds events each year to mark the significance of the metropolitan city as part of a week of festivals that concludes on January 2.
