South Korean squad for Belgrade Universiade initiated

SEOUL, June 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's national squad for the 25th Universiade in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, was recognized in a ceremony at the Taeneung Athletes' Village in Seoul on Wednesday.

The Korean squad, comprised of 248 athletes and officials from 12 sports, will
play in the Belgrade Universiade to be held for 12 days from July 1.
Park Yong-sung, president of the Korean Olympic Committee, said the games have
special significance because South Korea's city of Gwangju has been chosen as the
venue for the 2015 Summer Universiade.
Kim Dae-ki, second vice minister of culture, sports and tourism, said the South
Korean sports community outperforms its economic scale. He asked athletes from
the world's 13th-largest economy to be civilian diplomats, producing good results
and giving fresh hope to people suffering from economic difficulties.
Team manager Kim Yang-jong responded, "We are here with fresh determination and
resolution with the selection of Gwangju as the venue for 2015 Summer
Universiade," vowing his team will do well in Belgrade to reflect the people's
attention and support.
South Korea's best showing was third overall in the 2003 Summer Universiade held
in Daegu.
