ITC rules in favor of Samsung against Sharp on LCD wide angle technology

By Hwang Doo-hyong
WASHINGTON, June 24 (Yonhap) -- The U.S. International Trade Commission Wednesday
ruled in favor of Samsung Electronics Co., the world's biggest producer of memory
chips and liquid crystal displays, in a patent case involving Japan's Sharp Corp.
The ITC said in a notice released on its Web site that Sharp's LCD products using
Samsung's patent on the wide viewing angle technology should be banned from the
U.S. market.
Samsung filed the complaint on the technology for high definition televisions in
December.
The ITC ruled that a second patent was not infringed upon by Sharp. Samsung had
claimed infringement of four patents.
In a tit-for-tat for patent complaints between Samsung and Sharp, a U.S. trade
judge earlier this month banned Samsung televisions from the U.S. market for the
infringement of patents owned by Sharp.
In another legal battle, the two electronic giants exchanged a win each for
patent infringement cases at a Japanese court in March.
A trade expert here predicted that Samsung and Sharp may soon settle cases on
several technology patents out of court, saying, "Both will suffer from
difficulty in shipping products to the U.S. unless they resolve the cases
amicably."
