M'SIA: STUDY ON IMPACT OF FOREIGN FILMS ON LOCAL PRODUCTION NEXT YEAR

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) -- The Information Communication and Culture
Ministry will study the impact of the entry of foreign films and programmes on
the quality and number of local productions early next year.

Presently, the ministry through the National Film Development Corporation
was conducting a study on fiction films in Malaysia including the
sociodemographic and psychographic profiles of viewers.

Deputy Minister Joseph Salang Gandum said this in reply to Hamim
Samuri, a MP in the Lower House of Parliament Thursday.

He said the ministry also planned to bring in foreign producers so that
local producers would feel the impact of competition and therefore enhance the
quality of their films.

According to the ministry's statistics, only 25 local films were produced in
2008, he said.
