SEOUL, June 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korea plans to launch a 3,000-strong military
unit that can readily be deployed to assist peacekeeping operations around the

The unit will consist of 1,000 special forces along with 2,000 non-combat or
backup troops, the defense ministry official said, declining to give further

(2nd LD) S. Korea posts current account surplus for 4th month in May
SEOUL -- South Korea posted a current account surplus in May for a fourth
straight month as imports fell faster than exports, but the amount narrowed from
the previous month, the central bank said Friday.
The current account surplus stood at US$3.63 billion in May, compared with $4.25
billion a month earlier, the Bank of Korea (BOK) said in a report. The current

President says N. Korea a 'hurdle' to world peace and security
SEOUL -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak strongly denounced North Korea
Friday for threatening the South with its nuclear arsenal and other weapons of
mass destruction, saying the communist nation is a threat and "hurdle" to world
peace and security.
"North Korea claims to support the spirit of 'By Our Nation Itself' but in
reality it is threatening its South Korean brothers and creating a hurdle to
peace and security in the world," the president said in a speech, marking the
60th anniversary of the death of renowned independence fighter Kim Koo.

Parliament opens extra session despite opposition protest
SEOUL -- A 30-day parliamentary session opened belatedly at the National Assembly
on Friday after the ruling party decided to unilaterally begin session to handle
disputed bills despite protest from the opposition.
The extraordinary session was initially scheduled to begin at the start of the
month but was postponed following the death of former President Roh Moo-hyun, who
took his own life in late May amid an intensifying corruption probe implicating
him and his family. The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) and Roh's
supporters have claimed the investigation was politically motivated.

SEOUL -- Three years ago, South Korean telecom giants KT Corp. and SK Telecom Co.
launched the world's first wireless Internet service with great fanfare,
promising users seamless broadband Internet access.
WiBro, an acronym for wireless broadband, was touted as a new money-spinner for
the local communications sector which was struggling to cope with saturation in
both fixed-line and mobile markets.

S. Korea, U.S. extend currency swap line
SEOUL, June 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's central bank said Friday it has extended
its currency swap facility with the U.S. Federal Reserve for an additional three
months to stabilize the local currency market.
The Bank of Korea (BOK) opened a US$30 billion, six-month swap agreement with the
U.S. Fed on Oct. 30, 2008, in the heat of global financial turmoil to help
bolster the Korean won. The accord was later extended for six months.
