Supreme Court of Karakalpakstan pronounced judgement on 27 Kazakhstani citizens
Astana, June 26, 2009 (Khabar) - Citiznes of Kazakhstan were under arrest in Nukus for several months. They were blamed for “illegal crossing of Uzbekistani border, attempt of theft of a large sum and violating of customs rules”. The state accuser demanded to imprison two citizens for 15 years and others – for 13 years. This March the group of Kazakhstanis found themselves on the territory of Uzbekistan through the Mangistau region and they were arrested by Uzbek policemen. Uzbekistan says the citizens of neighboring republic tried to dig out gas pipelines. And 27 people were deprived of 30 pieces of special equipment and automobiles that cost $1 million. The Kazakhstanis said they didn’t understand they violated the border because of absence of laws.

- Kazakh consulate controlled completely this issue since arrest of Kazakhstani citizens on the territory of Uzbekistan. I visited all trials and watched the judicial procedure and non violating of Constitutional rights of RK citizens. During the investigation of this case we constantly had contacts with arrested people and with their relatives and explained situation, perspectives and embassy helped in every possible way.

- Supreme Court of Karakalpakstan pronounced judgement on criminal cases of 27 Kazakhstani citizens. According to the sentence, everybody will pay the fine 600 monthly calculated indexes of Republic of Uzbekistan, 16 840 000 sums. Besides, all 30 pieces of technics that are in Karakalpakstan, were confiscated by the state as a weapon of crime. In principle, the blamed people agreed with the decision of the court. They think the court pronounced a human decision because of good-neighbor relations of Republic of Kazakhstan and Republic of Uzbekistan.
All 27 Kazakhstani citizens will return home soon. Yerzhan Ashikbayev, spokesman of Ministry for Foreign Affairs of RK has released an official statement for press. The trial on arrested Kazakhstani ended on June 24 in Nukus. Each of arrested people will pay about $11 000 instead of being imprisoned for 13 and 15 years.

- Taking into account official petition of Foreign Ministry of RK on 27 citizens of our country not connected with their imprisonment and taking into account their difficult family and financial situation and other softening circumstances, the court decided to free all arrested people. In this connection the Foreign Ministry of RK expresses gratitude to the Uzbek side for taken decision that completely answers spirit of fraternity and good neighborhood and humanism principles. Currently the citizens pass necessary procedures and receive their things and documents. In 1-2 days they will leave Nukus by bus or by train.
