The Chargé d'Affaires Of The Permanent Representation To The UN Meets The Special Adviser To The Secretary-General

Baghdad (NINA) - The Chargé d'Affaires of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Abbas Kadhim Obaid, met with the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Internally Displaced Persons, Robert Piper, at the headquarters of the Permanent Representation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement, “During the meeting, views were exchanged on supporting the problem of internally displaced persons and finding solutions at the national and international levels.”

The Chargé d'Affaires indicated that the Iraqi government has placed finding sustainable solutions for the internally displaced at the top of its priorities and programs, and has taken many national measures and actions, starting with evacuation, shelter, relief, and reconstruction of liberated cities, and providing all means of return for the internally displaced, including removing explosives planted by terrorist groups and rebuilding infrastructure, and providing a safe environment that contributes to voluntary and safe return.”

He praised the role of the Secretary-General's Advisor in supporting the issue of internally displaced persons in all parts of the world, his direct support for the national program adopted by the Government of the Republic of Iraq, and the commitment it has made in this field.

He expressed his support for Piper's initiative to establish a global forum dedicated to the displaced, as well as highlighting the issue of the displaced in the political decisions and declarations scheduled to be adopted this year, such as the Future Summit, the High-Level Political Forum, and other important occasions.

For his part, Piper praised "the great progress made by the Iraqi government to end the issue of the displaced and close the remaining camps next July. Therefore, the United Nations views Iraq as a leader in the region and the world for the tireless efforts it has made in returning more than (4) million displaced people who left their areas due to terrorist groups."

Piper called on Iraq to support its initiative to establish a global forum dedicated to internally displaced persons. /End
