President calls for `unprecedented measures` to fight economic crisis

By Byun Duk-kun
SEOUL, June 26 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak called Friday for new and
aggressive measures to overcome the global economic crisis, saying such an
unprecedented difficulty requires unique and epochal steps to overcome.
"We have the experience of overcoming the Asian financial crisis, but we cannot
just depend on our past experience to overcome the ongoing troubles and we must
take measures that will prepare us for the new economic environment that will
follow the end of the crisis," the president was quoted as saying in an extended
meeting of his secretaries.
"We have taken unprecedented measures in the face of an unprecedented crisis that
have had some good results. What we do next is still more important and we need a
new way of thinking," he said, according to his spokesman Lee Dong-kwan.
The president's renewed call for increased efforts to fight the economic downturn
comes after the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD) said
the South Korean economy, the world's 13th largest, may be nearing the end of the
worst global economic downturn in decades.
The OECD predicted the country will grow 3.5 percent next year though it will
mark a 2.2 percent contraction for the year, still becoming one of the first
countries in the world to have overcome the crisis.
Lee has repeatedly warned against letting the country's guard down at such
positive outlooks, noting it may take up to two more years before such positive
changes will lead to actual improvements in the market.
"Until now, we have worked for small-and-medium-sized companies and ordinary
citizens, but the people still cannot feel such efforts. And that is why we are
said to only look out for the rich and large conglomerates even though we are not
in reality," the president said.
"Therefore, we must thinking deeper about what effects and benefits a policy will
bring to the people and try to win their support and understanding by paying more
attention to their opinions and needs," he added.
