SURVEY: MALAYSIA`S MOBILE SERVICE PROVIDERS EXPECTED TO EARN MORE

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- Mobile service providers in Malaysia
are expected to earn more in the near future, according to a survey by
management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company Accenture.

The Accenture Global Broadcast Consumer Survey also showed that Malaysians
want more mobile content and are more ready to purchase mobile video content for
download.

Malaysians, especially the older demographics, are well ahead of the global
average in buying downloadable mobile content, Accenture said.

"Malaysians are more advanced with many aspects of digital transformation
than consumers in other countries, including watching programmes on their mobile
phones," said Accenture managing director, communications, high-tech and media,
Southeast Asia, Alwin Magimay.

"We now live in a world where half of the population have access to mobile
devices and where audience fragmentation presents opportunities for content
providers to generate revenue," he said at a media briefing here Friday.

Magimay said the interest pattern was different according to age groups,
with interest higher among the younger demographics, falling slightly in the
middle age group, and then returning in the older demographics.

He said that content service providers should not just produce content
suitable for teenagers because they are considered more tech savvy.

"The survey results showed that the older groups are catching up with the
youth in terms of interest towards content on mobile," Magimay said.

"The key remains in understanding consumers, knowing what they want and
leveraging that data quickly to develop and deliver the right products and
services for the marketplace," he said.

According to Magimay, Malaysians need to move to the post-paid market from
the currently bigger pre-paid market if they wish to enjoy more programmes from
their mobile.

He also said that consumers prefer to watch time-sensitive content on their
mobile, meaning they want to watch programmes that are made specifically and
more suitable for mobile viewing.

"This is definitely a good sign for mobile content providers as even with
the current economic downturn, consumers are still showing a willingness to pay
for the service," he added.

The global survey was conducted online, covering 13,600 consumers across 13
countries, and this was the first time that Malaysia was included.
