Thailand’s Humanitarian Aid Delivered In Kayin State, Myanmar

BANGKOK, March 27 (Bernama) -- Thailand Red Cross Society’s humanitarian aid has arrived safely at the three pilot areas in Kayin State in Myanmar namely Nabu, Paing Kyong, and Thamanya.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said the relief bags were distributed to the internally displaced persons who fled from various areas devastated by armed conflict and are now seeking refuge at these sites. 

“The convoy carrying 4,000 relief bags for approximately 20,000 people arrived safely and the distribution was carried out by representatives of the Myanmar Red Cross Society with leaders of local Karen communities,” it said in a statement here Wednesday.

It said the distribution was remotely observed by the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon with technical support provided by the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) to ensure effectiveness, credibility, and transparency.

Last Monday, the Thai Red Cross Society handed over humanitarian assistance for the people of Myanmar as part of the effort to scale up assistance for the affected population along the two countries’ border.

Meanwhile, it said that the Vice Minister for Thailand’s Foreign Ministry, Sihasak Phuangketkeow held discussions with the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, Alounkeo Kittikhoun regarding the progress of the initiatives between Thailand and Myanmar.

It said the initiative to scale up humanitarian assistance for the people of Myanmar along the Thai-Myanmar border, which was supported by all ASEAN member states at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Retreat in Luang Prabang, Laos on Jan 29, 2024, was part of the ASEAN’s collective effort to advance the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.
