Sustainable Development Assistant Undersecretary participates in ministerial roundtable on importance of data

Washington, Apr. 20 (BNA): Danah Imad Hamzah, the Assistant Undersecretary for Sustainable Development at the Ministry of Sustainable Development, has called for continuing concerted international efforts in order to achieve sustainable development goals, highlighting the importance of enhancing the power of data and the need to benefit from them to accelerate the pace of reaching those goals and achieve the forecast visions and aspirations.

The Assistant Undersecretary made the statements while addressing the Partnership Roundtable on “The Power of Data - Unlocking the Data Dividend”, held yesterday on the sidelines of the 2024 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), held in Washington DC.

The ministerial-level roundtable event convened global leaders and data science pioneers in international organisations, such as the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the World Bank Group, in addition to data-related non-governmental organisations such as the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data.

The event aimed to explore opportunities for strengthened collaboration on financial and technical support for countries’ urgent data and data systems priorities.

The ministerial-level roundtable highlighted the importance of developing the country database, stressing that the availability of data is an essential prerequisite for determining development needs.

The participants also lauded Bahrain’s pioneering role in developing its database and enhancing its national statistical capacity in calculating and publishing development data in line with best international practices and requirements.

The Assistant Undersecretary for Sustainable Development also held meetings with a group of experts and specialists in the field of development data, including Haishan Fu, the Chief Statistician of the World Bank and Director of the World Bank's Development Data Group.
