S. Korea's Jennifer Song takes U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship
SEOUL, June 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Jennifer Song has won the 2009 U.S.
Women's Amateur Public Links Championship (WAPL), beating her compatriot Kimberly
Kim with the largest margin of victory in WAPL history, the U.S. Golf
Association's Web site said.
With the usual match-play concessions at the 6,267-yard, par-72 Red Tail Golf
Club near Boston, Song was nine under par for the 30 holes of the 36-hole match,
held Saturday (U.S. time). Hitting tee shots at the 250-yard range, she never
missed a fairway (23 of 23) and hit 25 of 30 greens in regulation, the Web site
said.
"Today I was super hot," Song, 19, was quoted as saying after the game. "I can't
believe I made a bunch of birdies, and some of the putts were really hard."
Song made 10 birdies and just two were conceded. She made only one bogey in the
match, according to the WAPL.
With a 5-up advantage after 18 holes, Song captured the par-3 25th hole with a
birdie to go 6 up. Kim birdied the par-4 24th hole to regain the 5-up margin, but
then Song birdied the next two par-4 25th and 26th holes to go 7 up. The match
ended on the 30th green after Song holed a 3-foot par putt. The margin of victory
was the largest in the WAPL's 33-year history, according to its Web site.
Song was picked for the South Korean national golf team while in high school in
2007. She started school a year later at the University of Southern California.
