Senior civil servants to donate salary to underprivileged students

SEOUL, June 29 (Yonhap) -- Senior South Korean government officials will donate
up to 10 percent of their wages to help students from underprivileged families,
the home affairs ministry said Monday.
In an effort to support low-income households suffering from the ongoing economic
crisis, 268 minister- and vice minister-level officials, heads of state-run
universities and high-ranking military personnel will contribute a total of 2.6
billion won (about US$2 million) from their salaries to fund schooling and meal
costs for some 2,600 high school students, the ministry said.
The students selected from 16 cities and provinces will each receive 1 million won.
