M'SIA: PARLIAMENT TO DEBATE MOTION ON INFLUENZA A(H1N1)

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Lower House of Parliament is expected
to debate an emergency motion by Member of Parliament Dr Lee Boon Chye on the
Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak and the appropriate measures taken.

Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia said Dr Lee’s motion fulfilled the
criteria of being specific, of public interest and urgent.

"Since the motion met the three criteria, I have agreed for the debate to
start at 4.30pm, under Standing Order 18(3)(b). The question and answer session
will last for an hour (30 minutes for question and 30 minutes for answer from
the government)," he said.

Dr Lee, in his application had said that as of June 28, there were 124 H1N1
cases in the country, including 17 locally transmitted cases.

He had asked the Lower House of Parliament to debate on whether the
screening measures at borders and ports of entry like the KL International
Airport were effective or needed to be reviewed.

Another issue was whether the joint effort between the Health Ministry and
other ministries, relevant agencies, departments or local councils to contain
the flu had worked.

"We also want to know as to what extent the closing of schools, shopping
malls, factories and other public places will have on the country's economy," he
said.

Meanwhile, on June 29, 20 new cases were reported with four of those locally
transmitted cases, raising the total of cases in the country to 144.
