FRANCE WILLING TO HELP M'SIA DEVELOP NUCLEAR ENERGY
From Ahmad Kamil Tahir
PARIS, June 30 (Bernama) -- France is prepared to assist Malaysia in
developing a nuclear energy plant to generate electric power, said Deputy Prime
Minister Muhyiddin Yassin Tuesday.
He said the offer was conveyed by the Chief Secretary of the Elysee
Palace, Claude Gueant, who is also the senior adviser to the French President at
a meeting here on Monday.
"At the meeting, Gueant had conveyed the willingness of the French
government to consider cooperation with Malaysia to develop a nuclear power
plant if Malaysia plans to use nuclear energy for electricity," he told
Malaysian journalists covering his three-day working visit to France beginning
Monday.
He said that Gueant also invited Malaysian nuclear experts to visit France
to discuss the methods of using nuclear energy to generate electricity.
"France is quite developed in the use of nuclear energy to generate electric
power and it is not surprising if 80 per cent of the electricity supply in the
country comes from nuclear energy," he said.
Muhyiddin said that at the meeting, both parties had agreed to have more
visits by top level leaders to boost bilateral relations as well as political
ties between the two countries.
He said that Gueant had also hinted the possibility of France sending French
language teachers to Malaysia on a voluntary basis to improve the teaching of
the language among Malaysian students.
"Currently, there are several government schools having teachers to teach
the French language as a third language after Malay and English," he said.
Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said he had held a meeting
with French Education Minister Luc Chatel, and had discussed various
possibilities where both countries could forge wider cooperation in education
such as vocational, technical and teacher training as well as other fields
deemed appropriate.
