Thai Olympic team names flag bearers for Paris 2024 opening ceremony

BANGKOK, July 26 (TNA) - The Olympic Committee of Thailand has announced its flag bearers for the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, set to take place on July 26.

Puripol Boonson, Thailand's top 100-meter sprinter, will carry the flag for the men's team, while 12-year-old skateboarder Vareeraya Sukasem will represent the women's team.

Vareeraya's selection aligns with the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) initiative to promote youth athletes. At 12, she will be the youngest Thai Olympian in history.

This choice reflects Thailand’s commitment to nurturing young talent. It also supports the country’s bid to host the Youth Olympic Games.

Vareeraya, who began extreme sports at age 6, will compete in the women's street skateboarding event on July 28 at Place de la Concorde in Paris.

The Thai Olympic Committee also announced prize money for medal winners:

  • Gold: 10 million baht ($280,000) in a lump sum, or 12 million baht ($336,000) paid over four years
  • Silver: 6 million baht ($168,000) in a lump sum, or 7.2 million baht ($201,600) paid over four years
  • Bronze: 4 million baht ($112,000) in a lump sum, or 4.8 million baht ($134,400) paid over four years

Thailand will send 51 athletes competing in 16 sports to the Paris Olympics, the largest contingent among the 11 ASEAN nations. -819 (TNA)
