MINISTRY WORKING WITH CENTRAL BANK TO TACKLE E-GAMBLING
KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 (Bernama) -- The Home Ministry is working closely with Central Bank of Malaysia to tackle the online gambling menace, Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.
He also said that since January this year police have raided 2,900 premises
in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur which offered gambling activities and arrested
2,600 people.
The ministry has also identified 2,500 websites offering online gambling, he
said.
"Online gambling is a serious matter and if left unchecked, it could give
rise to other crimes such as illegal money lending, snatch theft, gangsterism
and robbery," he told reporters at parliament lobby.
His comment came amid reports of rising online gambling activities in the
country, especially in the Klang Valley, with links to syndicates operating in
Hong Kong and the Philippines.
Hishammuddin also said he would also inspect areas where snatch theft
incidence were high.
"This is part of the ministry's and the minister's efforts to tackle the
problem in a holistic manner," he said.
