Iraq Participates In Security Council Session On Children And Armed Conflict

Baghdad / NINA /- The Chargé d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Abbas Kazim Obaid, participated in the session of the Security Council Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict.

Obaid delivered Iraq's speech after the adoption of the conclusions of the fifth report of the Secretary-General on children and armed conflict. The closed session of the Working Group was held at the United Nations headquarters.

He referred to the fruitful cooperation between Iraq and the Office of Virginia Campa, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, which resulted in the signing of an action plan between the two parties last year for a period of one year.

He stressed Iraq's commitment to implementing the provisions of the plan, which contributed to removing Iraq's name from the annex to the Secretary-General's report issued last June.

He also reviewed the national measures and programs concerned with the rehabilitation and reintegration of children and called on the Working Group to exert pressure on countries that have not evacuated their foreign child nationals in Iraq.

For her part, Campa praised the national measures taken by Iraqi institutions to promote and protect children's rights, and described Iraq as a success story and a model to be emulated in the region, expressing her aspiration to approve the Child Protection Law submitted to the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

The member states of the Working Group, who are members of the Security Council, also appreciated the government's efforts in promoting and protecting children's rights in Iraq, welcoming the national measures taken to stop violations and improve the conditions of children. /End
