Malaysia’s Foreign Minister In New York For 79th UNGA

From Nabilah Saleh

NEW YORK, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has arrived in New York, United States, to represent Malaysia at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Mohamad arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 8:30 pm local time on Saturday, accompanied by his wife, Raja Datin Seri Salbiah Tengku Nujumuddin.

Upon arrival, he was received by Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the UN,  Dr Ahmad Faisal Mohamad, and Malaysia’s Consul General in New York, Amir Farid Abu Hasan.

On Friday, Bernama reported that Mohamad, attending his first UNGA since becoming Foreign Minister in December 2023, is scheduled to deliver a statement during the High-Level General Debate on Sept 28.

The national statement is expected to emphasise Malaysia’s stance on various issues, prioritising inclusivity, solidarity, and regional cooperation.

In addition to the national statement, Mohamad will attend several high-level meetings, including the Summit of the Future on Sept 22-23, where he will also deliver a national statement.

The Summit for the Future, which will be held concurrently with this year’s UNGA, is a cornerstone of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' vision for "Our Common Agenda," first unveiled in September 2021.

This agenda calls for broad commitments to reform and strengthen the international system, aiming to address emerging challenges such as climate change, technological inequality, and the erosion of multilateralism.

The 79th session of UNGA will feature three key events -- namely the Summit of the Future (Sept 22-23), the General Debate (Sept 24-28, 30), and the High-Level Meeting on Sea-Level Rise (Sept 25).
