Syria: The Israeli aggression on countries of the region pushes it towards a dangerous escalation

New York, SANA-Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Bassam Sabbagh, warned that the widespread Israeli aggression on countries and peoples of the region is pushing it to the brink of a dangerous escalation and confrontation whose consequences cannot be predicted that would cause disastrous repercussions on peace and security in the region and far beyond.

Sabbagh, who read Syria’s statement at the 79th session of the United Nations’ General Assembly, called on all member states of the international organization to put an end to the Israeli aggression on Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, and hold the occupation resposible for its crimes, and ensure that it does not escape punishment.

Minister Sabbagh elaborated that the continued Israeli occupation of Arab lands since 1967, including the Syrian Golan, and committing genocide and war crimes is still a clear witness to United Nations’ failure to end this racist, expansionist occupation and represents a decisive evidence of the United States’ ban for the Security Council to assume its responsibility in the face of threats that target international peace and security.

On Palestine, Sabbagh affirmed that Syria strongly condemns Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people and renews its support for them in their struggle to liberate their occupied land and establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital and guarantee the right of refugees to return. Syria also stresses the need to hold “Israel” accountable for the war crimes it is committing.

The minister said that the open Israeli aggression has targeted our brotherly Lebanon, where the occupation committed an unprecedented crime by using communication means as a tool to kill unarmed civilians collectively, then it targeted the southern suburb of Beirut with cowardly aggression, using tons of explosive bombs to assassinate late secretary-general of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

He added that Syria has been subjected to a fierce terrorist war, direct aggression, multiple suffocating economic blockades, and unprecedented political and media provocation as huge sums of money have been spent to sow chaos, undermine Syria’s security and stability, and cause the displacement of millions of its citizens.

“The Syrian government continues to confront the remnants of terrorist groups and end the suffering of Syrians in the areas it still controls. It also follows the path of national reconciliation and supports the humanitarian response,” Sabbagh said.

Syria looks to the future with hope and optimism, but the success of its efforts necessarily requires the collective West to stop politicizing humanitarian work and linking it to political conditions, and that donors keep their promises in humanitarian funding and provide sustainable solutions for livelihoods, he added.

The Minister went on to say that Syria calls on the countries of the world to be brave and make the right choice that will ensure a better present and future for us and future generations and save humanity from the scourge of major wars looming on the horizon, supporting the construction of a more just and balanced multipolar global system.

“Instead of reaping the fruits of scientific progress to serve human civilization and the well-being of peoples, we are witnessing a shameful use of modern technologies to become a deadly tool for spreading killing and destruction, and instead of investing efforts and resources to achieve sustainable development, we see some sides go far beyond to plunder the countries’ resources and steal peoples’ resources,” Sabbagh said.
