N. Korea fires two Scud missiles: S. Korean official

(ATTN: UPDATES throughout with details; RECASTS headline, lead)
SEOUL, July 4 (Yonhap) -- North Korea test-launched two short-range missiles off
its eastern coast Saturday after firing four similar missiles earlier this week,
according to a South Korean government official.

"North Korea fired two missiles, which appeared to be a Scud type, toward the
East Sea from a base near Wonsan, Gangwon Province, at around 8 a.m. today," the
official said, requesting anonymity. "The missiles are estimated to have a range
of about 500km."
The North fired a salvo of four surface-to-ship missiles from its eastern coastal
base into the East Sea on Tuesday, which South Korean military officials
described as part of routine military drills.
North Korea is believed to have nearly 700 Scud missiles of various types.
