PARENTS, BE WARY OF INTERNET THREAT TO CHILDREN

MIRI (Malaysia), July 4 (Bernama) -- Parents should be one step ahead of
their children and be aware of threats posed from surfing the internet.

This way, Sarawak Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development and
Communication Lee Kim Shin reasoned Saturday, children could be protected
from the pitfalls of the virtual world.

Speaking at a workshop,'Protecting Children in Cyberspace 2009' -- jointly
organised by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and
Sarawak Education Department here -- he said there were already several
instances where adult users had fallen prey to online scams and ruining their
lives.

He added that the MCMC and the department would collaborate to come up with
a standard guideline that could be used to facilitate young internet users to
surf intelligently.

He said the workshop should be directed to find the right approach to
safeguard young users from cyber threats, without deterring them from continuing
to use the information technology facility.
