High school student in Nara arrested over classmate`s fatal stabbing

NARA, Japan, July 4 Kyodo -
A male high school student was arrested on suspicion of stabbing a classmate
Saturday morning at a train station in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture, and the victim
was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.
The 17-year-old third-year student told investigators he had planned to kill
the 18-year-old classmate, Tomoya Hamada, because he was upset as the victim
allegedly did not keep some promise, according to the police.
The two had gotten along well previously but their relations turned worse when
they were in the second year of the school, sources close to their school said.
Hamada was stabbed with a kitchen knife at two points in the back and one point
in the abdomen, resulting in his death apparently due to loss of blood, police
officials said.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and
the police are investigating the incident as a murder case as the victim was
confirmed dead some 90 minutes after the incident that took place shortly after
8 a.m., they said.
The two were on their way to school to take an end-of-term exam, according to
the police.
