Suspected N. Korean ship sailing in high seas off Yellow Sea
SEOUL, July 5 (Yonhap) -- A North Korean cargo ship being tracked by the U.S.
Navy on suspicion of carrying illegal weapons has been sailing in international
waters off the Yellow Sea of South Korea, military sources said Sunday.
The freighter called "Kang Nam" left North Korea's western port of Nampo June 17
and is the first vessel the U.S. Navy has tracked on suspicion of carrying
illegal weapons under U.N. Resolution 1874.
The resolution, adopted by the U.N. Security Council on June 12 in response to
North Korea's May 25 nuclear test, tightened financial and other sanctions
against the country.
"I believe that the North Korean cargo ship Kang Nam is heading toward North
Korea in international waters 200km off the western coast of South Korea," a
source said, adding the ship is expected to enter into the North Korea's
territorial waters at about 10 a.m. Monday.
The suspected North Korean cargo ship was reportedly heading toward Myanmar, but
it changed its course reportedly to head back to its country late last month.
