Yonhap News to launch Vietnamese news service next year
SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Yonhap) -- Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's key newswire, said Wednesday it plans to launch an artificial intelligence (AI)-based Vietnamese news service in cooperation with Vietnam News Agency (VNA) next year.
The plan was unveiled after Yonhap News Agency President and CEO Hwang Dae-il met with VNA General Director Vu Viet Trang at the VNA head office in Hanoi on the day and signed the relevant agreement.
Under the accord, Yonhap News plans to start producing Vietnamese news articles using an AI translation engine as early as the first half of next year and open a website to provide online services. The Vietnamese news service will provide major news on Korean politics, economy, culture and others to Vietnamese readers residing in South Korea and elsewhere.
VNA agreed to assign its personnel to help evaluate and improve the quality of Yonhap's Vietnamese-language articles. In addition, VNA will post links and banners for the new Yonhap service on its local online news service, "Vietnam Plus," so that local Vietnamese readers can also access Yonhap's Vietnamese articles.
Vietnam, with a population of over 100 million, is South Korea's third-largest trading partner after the United States and China, with a bilateral trade volume reaching US$79.4 billion last year. The number of Vietnamese people staying in South Korea for short or long periods was approximately 270,000 as of last year.
