'Anatomy of Dependence' author Doi dies at 89+
TOKYO, July 6 Kyodo -
Renowned psychoanalyst Takeo Doi, who penned the 1970s bestseller ''The Anatomy
of Dependence,'' an analysis of the mentality and behavioral patterns of
Japanese people, died Sunday of old age, his family said Monday. He was 89.
The book, published in 1971 as ''Amae-no Kozo'' in Japanese and later
translated into English and other languages, dwelled on the concept of
''amae,'' or emotional dependency on and the desire to be cared for by
authority figures.
It triggered the subsequent boom of publications of views on the Japanese
psyche, and the word amae has become established after influencing such
academic fields as cultural anthropology, sociology and psychology.
A graduate of the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine who served there as
professor between 1971 and 1980, Doi has since published a variety of books
featuring amae.
His works evolved from his critical acceptance of U.S. psychoanalysis while
studying in the country. Hisao Nakai, professor emeritus at Kobe University
described him as ''the only Japanese psychoanalyst accepted in the
English-speaking world.''
After leaving the University of Tokyo, Doi became a professor at International
Christian University and president of the former National Institute of Mental
Health, which has been merged into the National Center of Neurology and
Psychiatry.
His latest position was a special adviser to the PHP Research Institute, a
private think tank.
